Toni Kroos believes there is no way back to the Germany team for veterans Thomas Müller, Jérôme Boateng and Mats Hummels.
There have been increasing calls recently for the experienced trio to be reintegrated into the national set-up, especially given Müller and Boateng’s form for Champions League winners Bayern Munich.
But Kroos has little sympathy for his former team-mates, and insists that manager Jogi Löw is right to give the next generation their opportunity.
Speaking to Bild, Real Madrid midfielder Kroos said: “The national coach made it clear. Löw did not delete them because they would be bad games, but because he wanted to go a new way and trust young players.”
Kroos accepted that Müller, in particular, had a “great season”.
However, he claimed that bringing his fellow 30-year-old back into the fold would only serve to block the path for young attackers like Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sané (both team-mates of Müller’s at Bayern), Timo Werner and Kai Havertz.
In any case, Kroos believes Löw is not the kind of character to second guess his decisions.
“Löw wants to give them space to develop. That’s why my feeling tells me that he doesn’t roll backwards,” Kroos said.
“It’s not just about the shape of today, but about a project for the next few years,” he added.
Germany, who drew 1-1 with Spain in Stuttgart on Thursday, face Switzerland in their next UEFA Nations League A Group 4 game on Sunday.
