The midfield maestro became an instrumental figure after returning to action in August, helping the Magpies lift domestic silverware for the first time in 70 years alongside securing a top-five finish in the Premier League.

His contribution during May included scoring the opener in a crucial win against Chelsea, which would ultimately have a major impact on the race for UEFA Champions League qualification.

Speaking as the squad celebrated a memorable campaign with a lap of honour at St. James’ Park, Tonali told newcastleunited.com: “It wasn’t the best result to finish on, but it was so important to qualify for the Champions League - everyone at the club has earned it this season.

“After the cup win in March, we had three or four days to enjoy the moment with club staff and people in the city, but then we became solely focused on our Champions League ambition.

“We started working towards our own mini league within the overall table and I’m pleased that we have been able to achieve another goal, in addition to lifting the trophy."

Ahead of the summer break, World Cup qualifiers await the Italian international who was pleased to round off the domestic season with Sela Player of the Month recognition.

“This season, we’ve secured a top-five place in the most difficult league in the world," he added. "We’ll celebrate that achievement together first as everyone at the club has worked so hard for it.

“It’s important that we then rest after the international games, have a holiday and be ready to restart the season.

“I’m also really pleased to finish the season with a Sela Player of the Month award, which I dedicate to this amazing team and the amazing people of Newcastle.”
