West Ham United picked up all three points from their visit to Goodison Park against Everton after coming away with a 1-0 victory.

In what was a pretty dull match, Angelo Ogbonna’s header in the 74th-minute proved to be the only goal of the game.

The victory lifted West Ham above Everton on goal difference as David Moyes’ side moved up to sixth, level on points with Manchester United. They’re now just one point adrift of Brighton who occupy fourth place.

It’s been a pretty decent start to the campaign for the Hammers, then.

However, their afternoon on Merseyside wasn’t perfect - well not if your name is Tomas Soucek, anyway.

Not only did he see a first-half goal disallowed for offside but he also left the pitch in nasty circumstances towards to the end.

With 10 minutes remaining, Soucek was kicked in the face by Salomón Rondón in what appeared to be an accidental clash - at least that’s how referee Stuart Attwell saw it who even allowed play to continue while Soucek was on the floor.

Accidental or not, Soucek picked up some pretty nasty war wounds as a result of Rondon’s size 11 boot going in his face.

OUCH.

If anyone can cope with a kick in the face, though, it’s the Czech midfielder. He's tough as nails.

After the game, the match-winner admitted that it was a vital victory for West Ham.

“It was so important today because we wanted to bounce back from the last game,” Ogbonna told Sky Sports.

“I think it was very, very important [to win]. We kept a clean sheet and got what we deserved today.

“It was a totally hard game, but I think the players in the middle of the park, like Tomas [Souček] and Dec [Rice], played fantastically. They helped us to keep a clean sheet

“We want to challenge the teams at the top,” he confirmed.

“I think everything comes from the performance and today we can’t complain about our performance.

“Like I said, we won all the second balls in the middle of the park. We were unbelievable and that’s why we had our chance here.”
