Ten-man Chivas were denied a vital victory after Leonardo Fernández scored a magnificent stoppage-time equaliser for Toluca on Saturday.
Scorers: Fernández 90+7′; Macías 68′
Chivas had a numerical disadvantage for over an hour after Carlos Cisneros was punished for a late challenge on Toluca’s Haret Ortega in the 24th minute.
It seemed like matters had gotten even worse soon after when the hosts were awarded a penalty.
However, after a lengthy VAR review, the decision was reversed after replays showed there was minimal – if any – contact between Jorge Rodríguez and Chivas defender Hiram Mier’s trailing leg.
Toluca piled on the pressure as the interval approached, but the Flock just about managed to keep the game scoreless.
Macías replaced Jesús Angulo midway through the second half, and less than a minute later he opened the scoring with his first touch after being brilliantly set up by Fernando Beltrán.
Los Diablos Rojos had some excellent chances to equalise, but the visitors had goalkeeper Raúl Gudiño to thank for a string of important saves.
But Gudiño was unable to keep a clean sheet as Fernández led the Chivas a merry dance in the dying moments before firing a shot off the upright to send the home fans at the Estadio Nemesio Díez into delirium.
The result leaves Chivas (who had manager Marcelo Michel Leaño sent off in the closing stages) still outside the play-off spots in 13th, while Toluca lie eighth.
