Despite finishing in sixth place in the regular season, Toluca put on a show at home and stunned regular-season champions Club América 2-1 in the first leg of the Liga MX semi-finals.

Scorers: Ortega 23′, Fernández 42′ (pen); Lara 79′

Toluca went ahead in the 23rd minute as Club América failed to clear a free-kick and a defensive mix-up allowed Haret Ortega to dink the ball into the net from close range.

Just before half-time, Emilio Lara committed a foul on Jean Meneses in the area after Lara committed a defensive howler of his own.

This allowed Leo Fernández to step up and convert his penalty from 12 yards.

Toluca nearly went 3-0 up less than 10 minutes into the second half but in a very controversial ruling, Camilo Sanvezzo was determined to be offside by the slightest of margins when the ball was passed to him ahead of his goal.

Fortunately for the Eagles, Lara would make up for his massive mistake by finishing off a cross from Henry Martín to cut Toluca’s lead in half, which will give América a much stronger chance to turn things around in Saturday’s second leg.
