Sweden eventually saw off Australia to make the last eight of the Women’s Olympic Tournament, Netherlands tied 3-3 with Brazil.

GROUP E – Beckie bags brace for Canada, GB go through

Janine Beckie struck twice in a ten-minute spell straddling half-time to give Canada a 2-0 lead over Chile. Karen Araya pulled one back from the penalty spot before the hour mark but the Canadians had done enough to secure the victory.

Ellen White made it three goals in two games as Team GB  progressed with a 1-0 win over Japan. A second-half header from Lucy Bronze’s cross was enough to take all three points.

GROUP F – China share eight goals with Zambia, Netherlands six with Brazil

Wang Shuang hit a first-half hat-trick as China went in 3-2 up over Zambia. Racheal Kundananji had equalised before Shuang scored twice in quick succession, before Barbra Banda put the Africans back in the game. Banda went on to claim her second treble of the tournament as Zambia fought back to lead 4-3, only for Shuang to level from the spot before China had Qingtong Li sent off in the dying minutes.

Vivianne Miedema twice gave the Netherlands the lead over Brazil but Debinha and then a Marta spot-kick midway through the second-half saw the scores levelled. A poor back pass let in Ludmila to soon turn the game in Brazil’s favour but Dominique Janssen made it 3-3 direct from a 80th-minute free kick.

GROUP G – Sweden progress, US off the mark

Sam Kerr bagged a brace but later missed a penalty as Australia overturned an early deficit against Sweden. However, Lina Hurtig made it 2-2 and Fridolina Rolfo netted her second of the game, before Stina Blackstenius extended the lead to 4-2 in the last ten minutes.

The USA responded quickly to their shock defeat by the Swedes, as Rose Lavelle provided the advantage over New Zealand inside the opening ten minutes. Lindsey Horan doubled the lead on half-time and Abby Erceg later conceded an own-goal. Betsy Hassett got a goal back, sparking the US into three more of their own through Christen Press, Alex Morgan and a Catherine Bott own-goal.
