#Tokyo2020: Canada and USA progress after penalty shoot-outs | OneFootball

The Olympic women’s semi-finals on Monday will see Canada take on USA at 9am UK time, Sweden play Australia at noon.

While Sweden defeated Japan 3-1 and Australia defeated Great Britain after extra-time, Canada edged Brazil after a goalless game and the US eventually overcame the Netherlands after a 2-2 tie.

Sweden eliminate hosts

Sweden’s Magdalena Eriksson scored after only seven minutes but Mina Tanaka equalised midway through the half.

The Swedes struck early again after the break through Stina Blackstenius, this time going on to gain a two-goal cushion as Kosovare Asllani converted a penalty on 68 minutes.

Canada beat Brazil in shoot-out

A tight first half saw a penalty decision in Brazil’s favour reversed after VAR became involved. Jessie Fleming earlier went close, while at the other end Debinha was blocked out by Stephanie Labbe.

Vanessa Gilles hit the bar for Canada in the second half and both sides had chances to win it in extra-time but eventually a shoot-out were required to separate them.

The decisive moment came when Raphael stepped up and saw her penalty well saved by Labbe.

US defeat Dutch on pens

Vivianne Miedema gave the Netherlands the lead against the USA but the world champions hit back through Sam Mewis and Lynn WiIliams

Miedema got her second early in the second half, shooting from outside the area to beat Alyssa Naeher and make it 2-2.

The Dutch were awarded a penalty 10 minutes from the end of the ninety but Naeher saved Lieke Martens tame spot-kick.

Danielle van de Donk was desperately close with a header, the Dutch then had a goal ruled out for offside in extra-time, the US then suffering that outcome three times.

However, when it came down to a shoot-out, the US were comfortable winners.
