Canada will play Sweden for the gold medal at the Olympic Women’s tournament following narrow wins over the USA and Australia respectively.

The USA were defeated by a 75th-minute penalty awarded after VAR became involved, recent Reading signing Deanne Rose adjudged to have been fouled in the area.

Chelsea’s Jessie Fleming put away the spot-kick beyond the dive of substitute keeper Adrianna Franch, who had replaced Alyssa Naeher in the first half after the No.1 hurt herself when landing awkwardly.

Stephanie Labbé had earlier turned efforts from Carly Lloyd and Julie Ertz over the bar, Lloyd later clipping the frame of the goal with a powerful header.

Sweden made it five straight wins the the 2020 Olympics with a single-goal success over Australia.

Fridolina Rolfo rattled the Australian crossbar with a powerful 25-yard strike, while Hedvig Lindahl had some challenging moments at the other end.

Kerr went round the Sweden keeper wide left but was unable to make anything of it, then an Alanna Kennedy free-kick was touched  over the top.

Although Sweden did have the ball in the net moments later from another set-piece, Sam Kerr’s finish was ruled out.

Just 38 seconds after the restart Sweden went ahead, Teagan Micah managed to turn a deflected effort onto the bar but Rolfo hooked the rebound inside the far post.

Kosovare Asllani seemed to have added a late second but was denied by an offside decision, while Ellie carpenter was shown a red card at the death for her foul on Lina Hurtig.

The bronze medal match is on Thursday at 9am UK time, while the final is 3am Friday morning.
