This year’s Olympic women’s football tournament has been full of excitement. Several goal-scoring records have already been broken through just the first two games.

The all-time tournament goal-scoring record of 71 goals is almost certain to be shattered. The 12 teams have already scored 59 goals combined, and we have yet to finish group stage.

Vivianne Miedema, Barbara Banda, and Sweden’s dismantling of the US have commanded the headlines. Meanwhile, Great Britain has quietly gone atop Group E with two wins, and a total of three goals.

Ellen White has scored all three of those goals.

The Manchester City striker has tied teammate Steph Houghton for the most goals scored by a Team GB player. She scored in either half of the team’s opener against Chile. Her brilliant header against host Japan provided all the offence Team GB needed in that match. White’s tally gave Great Britain the win and an assured place in the quarter-finals.

Can Ellen White set a new record?

In addition to putting her team through to the next round, White has set herself up nicely. Team GB has two more games guaranteed at these Olympics. Coupled with White being the star striker that she is, she seems destined to re-write the record books.

Team GB faces Canada in the final match of the group stage. Canada needs to secure at least a draw to guarantee themselves a spot in the quarter-finals. This match takes place at the same time as Japan-Chile, so the Canadians will be doing some scoreboard watching. If Canada is down heading into the end stages, look for them to take more chances.

This is where White’s game is at it’s best. An absolute master of the attack, Ellen White is always up at the front when Team GB is pressing. If GB’s sublime midfield can stop Canada’s attack, they can easily transition. White could very well be the beneficiary of these counter-attacks.

Will White set a new record as Team GB’s all-time goal scorer? It seems likely, given the tournament she has had thus far. Only time will tell for certain, but as Ellen White’s star shines, so too does Team GB’s. Perhaps she can turn that shine into the shine of a gold medal.
