Who?

Highly-ranked bitter rivals are drawn against each other in Group G leaving plenty of drama to unfold before the knockout rounds kick off at Tokyo 2020.

  1. Australia (rank 9)
  2. New Zealand (rank: 22)
  3. Sweden (rank: 5)
  4. USA (rank: 1)

Need to know

Australia will look to rekindle their good fortune at past Games and have good chance at making it past the quarter-finals with their most experienced squad to date.

Despite being the lowest-ranked team in the group, New Zealand have the right amount of talent and the brains of Tom Sermanni to upset any of their opponents.

Always contenders in any international competition, a strong Sweden squad will aim to go one step further and turn their 2016 silver medals into gold.

The USA will hope to continue their good form and bounce back from their medal-less finish at Rio 2016. They’re the tournament favourites.

The key game

Old rivals meet again in Group G’s opening match between Sweden and the USA on 21 July.

Grab your popcorn because this one will have some fireworks.

The women to watch

Sam Kerr

As the face of Australian football, there’s no doubt all eyes will be on Chelsea forward Sam Kerr to be the difference-maker. Arguably one of the most lethal forwards of all time, every opponent will aim (and probably struggle) to slow her down.

Abby Erceg

Veteran defender Abby Erceg will act as the rock for Group G underdogs New Zealand. The North Carolina Courage player and national team captain has plenty of experience competing in top-level football which will be key to making it out of the group stage.

Fridolina Rolfö

Wolfsburg-turned-Barcelona star Fridolina Rolfö will be the all-around player on the pitch for Sweden. Her ability to play as a winger, centre-forward or even a midfielder alongside her experience in the silver medal-winning squad means she will be key in their quest for gold.

Julie Ertz

With a surplus of talent, it’s hard to pick who will be the standout star for team USA but the honour has to be handed to Julie Ertz. The Chicago Red Stars defensive midfielder is often an undisputed starter in the USWNT squad which says a lot. If she can bounce back to full fitness, she will be the key as they chase gold.
