FLW's Blackburn fan pundit has suggested the asking price for the team's two best players
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Blackburn Rovers have made a promising start to the new season under John Eustace.
Expectations for the Lancashire outfit prior to the campaign getting underway were not particularly high, especially with Sammie Szmodics heading for the exit door.
However, Rovers have performed well, and find themselves in the mix for a play-off place in these early stages.
Two players who have been crucial to their positive start this year have been Todd Cantwell and Hayden Carter.
Cantwell has been with the club since the summer, arriving from Rangers on a three-year deal, while Carter is in his sixth season with Blackburn since coming through the academy system.
When asked what price tag he would give to the club’s two best players, FLW’s Blackburn fan pundit Toby Wilding named Cantwell and Carter.
He believes that Cantwell could be worth up to £20 million due to the length of time left on his deal, while also suggesting Carter could be worth north of £10 million.
“I think Todd Cantwell is already looking a cut above on the ball in terms of his attacking creativity and quality, but obviously he only joined in the summer on a three-year contract, so there is absolutely no pressure to sell him in January,” Wilding told Football League World.
“So I think anytime soon it would have to take a ludicrous offer to convince Blackburn to sell him, so I’d be liking to think just because there is absolutely no need to sell.
“On top of everything else, it would have to be something over £20 million for him in the near future.
“The other player I would maybe look at as one of the best two, I would probably say Hayden Carter, certainly in terms of both the quality he is at and the ceiling he has to go to.
“I will maybe be looking at just over £10 million for him, perhaps, considering that potential, and the fact he’s already proven in the Championship.
“He’s already got a couple of years to go on his contract as well, and also his versatility to throw in there as well.
“There’s a lot of very positive attributes there, so I would say they’d be looking at just above £10 million. [That] might be a fair one for him.”
Cantwell has become an important part of the team since joining Blackburn on deadline day last August.
The playmaker has contributed two assists from nine appearances in the Championship, starting five times.
Meanwhile, Carter remains a key part of the team and has a contract with the Championship side until the summer of 2027.
Eustace will be hoping there is no immediate speculation over their futures, with the team in the fight for a top six place so far this season.
It’s been a positive start to the season for Blackburn, and Cantwell and Carter will be key to it remaining that way.
It’s unlikely there will be any uncertainty over Cantwell’s future so soon into his start to life at Ewood Park.
However, Carter is someone that could easily attract some interest in the upcoming January transfer window, which will be a concern for Eustace.
