Toby Alderweireld has admitted he would be open to returning to former side Ajax at some point in his career.
The Belgium international came through the fabled youth system in Amsterdam and went on to make almost 200 appearances for the Eredivisie giants.
Alderweireld eventually left in 2013 to join Atlético Madrid and signed for Spurs two years later.
The 29-year-old has gone on to become one of the Premier League’s most consistent performers and was heavily linked with a switch to Manchester United over the summer.
However the central defender has revealed that he could be tempted to go back to Netherlands at some point in the future.
“Never say never,” the Belgian told Dutch outlet De Telegraaf.
“At this moment in my career I don’t think about that yet. I think I can go on for years at this level. If I ever did, it is not to take it easy.
“I do not want to be 36-years-old and can hardly walk. When I return, I certainly want to leave something. And not only in the dressing room.
“Of course it is close to home in Belgium and I have a bond with the club, because I played football at Ajax for eight years. Achieving championships, the third star, experience.”
Alderweireld is almost certainly set to start in Tottenham’s Champions League encounter with PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday.
