Timo Werner has opened up on the primary reason for signing with Chelsea. The £47.5 million signing from RB Leipzig chose Chelsea over other top European clubs for one reason – Frank Lampard. It is a well-known fact that Lampard has been trying to shape up Chelsea in an exciting image and the football played by the blues under his management has been entertaining and exciting – even if several goals are conceded in the process.
After signing Hakim Ziyech from Ajax in January, Lampard has been keen on strengthening the offensive positions. The impending departure of Willian and Pedro is a key factor behind this decision. Chelsea moved swiftly to sign Werner by activating his release clause, but convincing the 24-year-old could have taken a lot of effort – especially considering the magnitude of interest in his signature. According to Goal.com, Werner said:
“The discussions with the board at Chelsea were so good that I ultimately chose them.“Frank Lampard in particular stood behind me and really wanted me to know that if I went to Chelsea, I could feel just as comfortable as I do with Leipzig.“In the conversations with me, the coach often emphasised how much he wanted me, how much he valued me as a person.”
Werner signed off in style for RB Leipzig after scoring in his final match for the club. He has now scored 34 goals so far this season, while he is also a key contributor to the team set up with 13 assists. Werner also arrives at Chelsea at the best possible age. He is expected to take up the flanks by switching sides with Christian Pulisic or play just behind Tammy Abraham as a second striker.
