Middlesbrough and Tottenham are closing in on a deal for Djed Spence, with the potential for a deal to be done over the weekend and allowing the full-back to start pre-season on Monday.

Spence has become hot property in the summer transfer window, having impressed for Nottingham Forest on loan in the Championship last season.

Having been deemed surplus to requirements by Boro, the 21-year-old was sent on loan to Forest, who he helped to promotion, scoring twice and registering four assists in 42 league and play-off appearances.

The England U21 international remains under contract with Boro and it is the Teessiders now negotiating with Tottenham for his sale.

After weeks of dealing, it’s no emerged from 90min that Spurs are closing in on the signing of Spence in a deal worth £15m plus add-ons.

It’s explained that the deal could be completed ahead of Spurs starting pre-season on Monday, as Antonio Conte makes some impressive moves in the summer transfer market.

Spence made 70 appearances at Middlesbrough as a youngster, until Neil Warnock granted him a loan to Forest at the beginning of the 2021/22 campaign.

The Verdict

This feels like a saga that’s been going on forever, even though it is being concluded quite swiftly before Spurs begin pre-season.

Boro will be glad to free themselves of Spence and bring in the cash, whilst you’d imagine the player will be itching to get himself to Spurs.

Pre-season is such a crucial time for a new signing and Spence will want to hit the ground running in the next couple of weeks, not allowing the momentum he built in Nottingham to disappear.
