Tim Sherwood has said that Cristiano Ronaldo played a part in Bruno Fernandres’ disappointing penalty miss against Aston Villa on Saturday.

Fernandes skied his effort over the bar in stoppage-time,after the game’s only goalscorer Kortney Hause was punished for handling the ball inside the box.

It was a chance to salvage a point from the game, which in turn would have seen United finish the weekend joint 1st in the Premier League, but it wasn’t to be as Fernandes missed.

Everyone wondered who would be on penalty duty for United with both Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo on the pitch, but it was Fernandes who took it in the end.

Speaking after the game, former Tottenham and Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood said it was Ronaldo’s presence that “distorted” Fernandes’ thinking.

Sherwood said (as per Sky Sports, h/t Football Daily): “He threw the ball to Ronaldo in an international game and Ronaldo missed one… But he doesn’t miss that normally. You’ve never, ever seen him blast the ball over the crossbar.

“He always waits for the goalkeeper to go down and rolls it in the other corner. It’s the pressure now of someone else.

“The main man is here. 100% it has distorted his thinking there. He knows he’s got one chance and one chance only, and I think we’ve just seen it go by.”

I support Solskjaer’s decision to keep Fernandes on penalties because his of his outstanding record from the spot. There’s no point changing something unless it’s broken and that is not the case yet for Fernandes from the spot.
