Tierna Davidson's contract extension was the perfect move for Gotham FC | OneFootball

On Wednesday, NJ/NY Gotham FC fans received some great news: Tierna Davidson has extended her contract. The Bats announced that the defender has added another year to her deal while reworking her contract that she initially signed in 2024. This means she will remain with the team through 2027.

The contract extension was the right move for Gotham FC. Davidson is sadly missing the rest of the 2025 season due to the ACL injury she suffered in the third NWSL game of the year. As such, she is missing a year on her contract. The extension ensures she will still play for three years with the NJ/NY side.

Moreover, Davidson is one of the best center-backs in the league. Her partnership with Emily Sonnett in 2024 helped turn Gotham into one of the best defensive teams that year. Jess Carter has done a good job, and even others like Nealy Martin have stepped into the center-back role in Davidson's absence. Of course, Carter can play both as a center-back and right-back. However, the partnership of Sonnett and Davidson was at another level.

One could also argue that if Davidson did not face the injuries that she has throughout her career, then she would be considered one of the best defenders in the world.

Speaking about her injuries and the current one, Gotham FC did not have to extend her at this time. They could have waited to see what would happen with the star defender. Yet, the Bats made the move to extend her even while she is recovering from the ACL injury. She recognized that, and spoke about her gratitude to gothamfc.com.

Davidson's one full season with the team was enough for her to continue with Gotham. Notably, when she does return, she will likely have some growing pains, as seen with Midge Purce this season. Nevertheless, her return will be welcomed.

The one item that is unknown, though, is how Davidson's contract was changed. What is known is that Gotham FC is fortunate that she agreed to extend her stay. Maybe, she will eventually extend her contract again in the future.
