A late Marcus Thuram strike fired Inter back to the top of the table and ruined Romelu Lukaku’s return to San Siro with Roma.
Scorers: Thuram 81′
The Belgian striker took centre stage after his controversial summer spurning of another spell at the Nerazzurri, with with 40,000 whistles being distributed among home fans to welcome their former hero back but he contributed little of note over the 90 minutes.
Those jeers almost turned to cheers early on, only for Hakan Çalhanoğlu’s curling effort to crash against the crossbar, while Federico Dimarco curled a delicious outside-of-the-boot effort inches past the post.
The Inter pressure, with José Mourinho watching on from the stands due to his suspension, continued after half-time as Thuram steered a header onto the roof of the net as his side turned the screw.
And with his father Lilian also in the stands along with Mourinho, the younger Thuram gave him a goal to be proud of when he struck from close range with nine minutes remaining to decide a tense affair.
Simone Inzaghi’s side move back to the top of the table with the victory, while Roma remain eighth.
