There’s plenty of young footballing talent at Celtic FC Women, and with a manager who has proven she is not afraid to give youth a chance, could we see more youngsters take to the pitch next season? The Celtic Star picks three breakthrough stars for Celtic FC Women under the guidance of Elena Sadiku…

With a range of youth players in different positions, we could easily fill out a starting 11 with them. I, for one, would love to see Elena Sadiku give chances to some of the younger players in the 2024/25 campaign, even if it’s just for a few minutes at a time.

Then again, I think that some of them are ready to be given a full run to see if they can pick up form. Tiree Burchill comes to mind.

Tiree Burchill

Tiree is the daughter of former Celtic striker Mark Burchill and she’s looking to follow in his footsteps. In 15 appearances, 12 of those being off the bench, she has managed to bag six goals and one assist. She made her debut in June 2022 and has been in and out the matchday squad since, so it would be nice to finally see her getting a run of games. Or at least another loan spell as I believe there is a lot of potential there.

Maria McAneny

Maria McAneny is another player who I thought we’d see more of in the 23/24 season. Of course, our wingers have been outstanding so I can understand why they’re being favoured, but again, Maria has loads of potential and can play in numerous positions. She is one of our academy graduates and had a brilliant spell on loan to Hearts in the 21/22 season. That year, she was even nominated for the PFA Scotland’s Women’s Young Player of the Year award.

Despite playing under 500 minutes this season, Maria has five assists to her name. Being able to play and perform all over the pitch, she is a player who it would be nice to see be given a chance in pre-season!

Clare Goldie

When Clare Goldie was chosen to feature against Partick Thistle in the final 23/24 game at the Excelsior, I thought she was a standout performer. For a 19-year-old, she has proven herself to be a valuable asset in the midfield, whilst also offering a lot on the attack.

She picks her passes well, allowing our forwards to break lines and be sent through on goal by the youngster. When we’re out of possession, she does well to press, forcing the opposition into mistakes and helping the Celts to win the ball back quickly. In addition to those two fantastic traits, she is also a very physical presence in the midfield. Players look apprehensive to go against her and look to keep the ball from getting to her.

She is on a contract until 2026 so there is more than enough time for her to break into the first team. After the Thistle game, The Celtic Star asked Elena about Goldie to which she said that the youngster was “Celtic’s future” so that’s certainly promising.

Those are just three of the brilliant young players we have at our disposal but there are many more that could be given the nod if Elena wanted to experiment. Pre-season will be an extremely important time for Celtic and although the current season has just ended, I’m sure I’m not the only one counting down the days until the next campaign begins!
