Three Talking Points: Uruguay 0-0 South Korea

As they took a stand off-ish approach throughout the game, Uruguay’s defence came out on top in what was an end-to-end game against South Korea. South Korea had a fair amount of chances to score, but the Asian outfit never found the final touch.

Diego Godin still has it

The ex-Inter and Atletico Madrid defender put in an imperious performance in the game, as he won nine aerial duels out of a total 11 and he came closest to scoring for the Uruguayan outfit. At the end of the first half, he smacked the woodwork and so did Federico Valverde at the end of the second half.

Now at Velez Sarsfield, it has been a while since Godin played at the highest level but the game showed that he may still have it, as Uruguay saw their midfield get overrun for a majority of the game and the lack of support often made it tough for both Godin and Jose Maria Gimenez.

Kim Min-jae is the real deal

Kim Min-jae has impressed a lot at Napoli and in the game on Thursday, the ex-Fenerbahce defender made a fair bit of impact as well. While playing in a much more organised side, as compared to Uruguay, the defender won four aerial duels and was really effective in breaking down opposition lines with his passing.

He also attempted 11 long balls and succeeded with six of them, showing intent with his ability on the ball too. With Napoli well clear at the top of the Serie A table, Kim’s performances and fitness will be a massive part of the Partenopei’s season.

Uruguay’s backline will be key

While Uruguay couldn’t pick all three points, this isn’t the first time that their defence has stood tall. It is their seventh clean sheet in as many as eight games in all competitions and the last time they conceded a goal on the 23rd of September and before that, they last conceded a goal back in February this year.

Those numbers show what a resolute defender they have and that is likely to be key, even though South Korea threatened a fair bit in the game. Godin and Gimenez standing tall is a great sign, even though their cohesion in midfield has to improve.
