Mexico defeated Saudi Arabia 2-1 in what was a thrilling encounter. However, despite winning, their efforts were not enough to qualify out of the group. Mexico needed a third goal whilst they were leading 2-0 to ensure qualification but Saudi Arabia struck late in stoppage time which ultimately ended their World Cup campaign.

The Napoli wide player was heavily instrumental during Mexico’s only win of the tournament. His inventive endeavour caused problems throughout the game as he opened up the Saudi Arabia defence on multiple occasions. The 27-year-old was unlucky not to see one of his long range efforts hit the back of the net but Mohammed Al Owais, the Saudi Arabian goalkeeper, got down low quickly and saved well.
The Pachuca midfielder curled home a beautiful left-footed free-kick from 32-yards out just minutes after Henry Martín opened the scoring. Chavez’s goal is only the second free-kick to be scored during this World Cup after Marcus Rashford saw his effort fly past Danny Ward on Tuesday evening.
