On another dramatic day of the World Cup group stages, Uruguay did manage to beat Ghana but ended up getting knocked out of the FIFA World Cup.
Andre Ayew missed a penalty in the second half, only to see Giorgian de Arrascaeta score twice to help Uruguay to a 2-0 lead. As South Korea turned the tie around against Portugal, Uruguay needed another goal to go through but it never came.
Uruguay didn’t deserve to go through
While Uruguay did win the game today, it came as a result of Ayew missing a penalty. And their performances against Portugal and South Korea were rather dour and they never really showed enough attacking intent to go through. At the end, it was fitting that the lack of a goal cost them.
Ghana were playing two games
While Ghana were playing a game on the pitch, they were fighting a mental battle against themselves to avenge the ghosts of 2010. They could never do that, as Luis Suarez played a role in Uruguay’s goals and Ghana missed a penalty once again. Uruguay meanwhile, were comfortable and were playing just one game.
Suarez ends international career on bitter note?
While Suarez did well on the pitch and created the goals for De Arrascaeta, the fact that this was probably his last major international tournament and game marks a bittersweet end to his career for Uruguay. For someone who had such an iconic career and the incident in 2010 shaped his global reputation, it was ironic that he broke down after that game against Ghana.
