After a breakthrough second season on loan with FC Girona, during which he recorded 2 goals and 10 assists, Yan Couto returned to a contrast rainy Manchester with hopes of clarifying and securing his long-term football home. In the end, it was Sebastian Kehl who came calling for the flairy 22-year-old full-back.
Unfortunately, similar to BVB as a whole, Couto's 2024/25 season has been rocky, to say the least. The Brazilian was in and out of the starting XI to start the campaign and has now essentially been relegated to the bench under Niko Kovac, leaving a makeshift rotation of Julian Ryerson, Waldemar Anton, Niklas Süle, and even Pascal Gross at times trying to fill the void on that right-hand side.
It's fair to say that Couto hasn't fully arrived in Dortmund (figuratively and literally). Kehl negotiated an initial one-year loan with Man City, concluding with a buy obligation of around 25-30 million euros depending on add-ons, which will make him the second most expensive right-back in Bundesliga history. What looked like a clever deal at the time is taking a turn in the direction of "flop territory."
With reportedly yet another rebuild being declared for the offseason, it's not entirely clear as of right now if Couto will be included in the renovation of die Schwarzgelben. Here is why Dortmund would be wrong to cut ties with their new number two so swiftly:
