Three points at Gladbach

Eintracht Frankfurt beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-2 in a breathless encounter that featured three goals in the space of five minutes early in the second half.

Florian Neuhaus put Adi Hütter’s side in front at Borussia-Park, but Rafael Borré’s fourth league goal of the campaign left the teams all square at the break. A flurry of goals early in the second half saw Eintracht take the lead through Jesper Lindström, get pegged back by Ramy Bensebaini’s penalty and go in front again courtesy of Daichi Kamada. Tuta was sent off for a second bookable offence with 20 minutes remaining, but Eintracht held on for another impressive victory.

Same again for Eintracht

Unsurprisingly, head coach Oliver Glasner saw no reason to make any changes to the Eintracht side that fought back from 2-0 down to defeat Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday. That meant Martin Hinteregger, Danny da Costa and Lindström kept their places in the team, with Makoto Hasebe and Timothy Chandler named on the bench. Jens Petter Hauge was ruled out with a muscle problem.

Slow start

Just as they did on Sunday, Eintracht fell behind early on at Borussia-Park. Luca Netz’s deep cross was steered into the path of Neuhaus by Joe Scally, and the 24-year-old midfielder drilled a low finish into the far corner to break the deadlock after just six minutes. Kevin Trapp produced a tremendous save to deny Scally 10 minutes later, but the goal would not have counted as the American was marginally offside from Breel Embolo’s pass.

Eintracht’s efforts were not helped by a thigh injury midway through the half to Kristijan Jakic, who was replaced in the heart of the Eagles’ midfield by Sebastian Rode. Eintracht gradually began to peg Borussia back and forced an equaliser right on half-time, Borré converting Lindström’s low cross from point-blank range after Djibril Sow had robbed Denis Zakaria of the ball in midfield.

Eagles emerge triumphant

In a frantic start to the second half, Lindström’s clinical finish from Evan Ndicka’s square ball put Eintracht ahead for the first time in the match before Bensebaini sent Trapp the wrong way from the penalty spot after Da Costa’s foul on Kouadio Kone. Gladbach were level for just a matter of seconds, however, as Kamada combined brilliantly with Borré before finding the bottom corner with a placed effort.

It was almost 4-2 for Eintracht moments later, Lindström firing against the outside of the post from a central position inside the penalty area. Tuta was given his marching orders after collecting a second yellow card for a foul on Marcus Thuram, but the Eagles showed tremendous resilience in the final 20 minutes to hold on to all three points.

Summary: Superb back-to-back wins for Eintracht

Six points from two games against Leverkusen and Gladbach is a magnificent return, particularly as Eintracht were behind in both matches. The Eagles are flying high at the moment – and long may it continue!
