Three players Tottenham Hotspur should sign if they qualify for the Champions League

The last week couldn’t have gone much better for Tottenham Hotspur. They pulled off back-to-back home wins, defeating Arsenal and Burnley.

Meanwhile, local rivals and Champions League chasers Arsenal lost twice. This has allowed Spurs to jump into the driving seat for a top four spot ahead of the final day.

On the last day, Antonio Conte’s men face already-relegated Norwich City, who have won just five games all season. A draw will be enough to secure their place in the Champions League for next season.

Barring an almighty implosion (which, knowing Spurs, isn’t impossible), the Lilywhites will be in Europe’s biggest club competition next year. However, if they wish to be competitive in it, they will need some upgrades to their squad.

Here are three players they should sign if they qualify for the Champions League.

Pau Torres

Cristian Romero has looked to be an inspired buy, while Eric Dier and Ben Davies have stepped it up a notch since the arrival of Conte. However, Tottenham may look to enhance their backline in the summer.

Pau Torres has been touted as a potential target for Spurs in the upcoming transfer window. The Villarreal defender reportedly has a £55 million buy-out clause in his contract, and is expected to leave the Champions League semi-finalists at the end of the season.

Unai Emery’s men go into the final game of the campaign, hoping that they can hold on to seventh place and qualify for the Europa Conference League. Evidently, a move to the north Londoners would be a step up. Not to mention, he would likely get a bigger salary in the Premier League.

Manchester United have previously been linked with Torres. However, given that they can finish in sixth place at best, they may not be as attractive as Spurs.

Achraf Hakimi

Conte loves his wing-backs. Everyone knows this. Juventus, the Italy national team, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Tottenham – the 52-year-old has used wing-backs in all of the biggest jobs in his career.

During their time at the San Siro, Achraf Hakimi and Conte combined brilliantly as they helped Inter to their first league title in 11 years. The Moroccan was sensational, scoring seven and assisting eight.

Since then, he made a big-money move to Paris Saint-Germain. His spell in Ligue 1 has been okay, scoring four and assisting six, but a transfer away does not seem completely out of the picture.

Spurs’ current options at right-wing-back are somewhat limited. Emerson Royal has been shaky for most of the campaign, while Matt Doherty started to show some promise before getting injured. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see them make a signing in this position.

Perhaps Hakimi is a bit of an unrealistic shout. Would he really want to throw away a guaranteed league title, a strong shot at the Champions League, and the chance to play with Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe (depending on his future) and Neymar, in favour of a reunion with Conte? Probably not.

However, there are plenty of other names in the picture. Nottingham Forest youngster Djed Spence and Netherlands international Denzel Dumfries have been closely linked, while rumours of a move for Adama Traore have also resurfaced.

Paulo Dybala

Back in 2019, Paulo Dybala was on the verge of a move to north London. A fee was agreed, but the player turned down the move.

The transfer didn’t make a whole lot of sense for the Argentine back then. He was at one of the best clubs in Europe, regularly winning trophies, and playing alongside Cristiano Ronaldo. Spurs had just reached the Champions League final, but this didn’t necessarily make them a more attractive prospect than Juventus.

Three years on, this move could be back on the cards. The Old Lady have fallen down to fourth place, and have just gone through their first trophy-less season since 2011. It has already been confirmed that Dybala will leave on a free transfer this summer.

One thing Spurs have struggled with for years is finding a good back-up option for Harry Kane. As one of the best strikers in the world, possible new recruits know that they will have a tough time dislodging the England captain from the starting XI.

Dybala is capable of playing through the middle if needed, making him an adequate deputy to Kane. Meanwhile, he can also play on either wing or as an attacking midfielder. He should have no trouble getting minutes on the pitch.

Squad depth is important to being competitive at the top level. With the likes of Kane, Dybala, Heung-min Son, Dejan Kulusevski, and Lucas Moura to choose from, Conte will have a frontline that is as good as he could ask for.

Although, with a player of his quality available on a free transfer, there is sure to be plenty of interest in him.
