Heading into this tasty all-Bundesliga battle, Leipzig’s top form in the league suggested they were on track for a DFB Pokal three-peat.

However, Wolfsburg welcomed the reigning champions to Volkswagen Arena and hit the ground running in front of raucous home fans.

Václav Černý was played in behind Leipzig’s backline and rifled the ball into the top netting beyond Péter Gulácsi for his first goal for the club.

Despite blasting six past Köln in the league last time out, the visiting attack was extremely flatfooted, with only one effort on target.

David Raum had a shot hit off the woodwork, while Youssuf Poulsen, Loïs Openda, Timo Werner and Xavi Simons couldn’t conjure up any worthwhile threats.

Things then went from bad to worse when Leipzig’s record goal scorer in the competition lost his head.

A rash challenge by Poulsen on Mattias Svanberg (which the Dane attempted to pull out of) saw the visitors play over half an hour with 10 men.

With the advantage, Wolfsburg continued to make things complicated and prevented any possibility of a comeback with a determined performance.

The result is a shockingly early exit for the back-to-back title holders, who have only been eliminated at this stage three times in 11 previous seasons.

Additionally, Wolfsburg picked up their first win in three games.

The last reigning champions to be eliminated in the second round was Bayern Munich in 2021.
