The 9th of March 2020 marked Inter’s 112th birthday. Football has evolved massively through the decades, but if there is one thing that always remains intact and never changes, it is the DNA of each team. The Nerazzurri have always maintained their erratic and unpredictable attitude.

Going through the 112 years of history of the Beneamata, it is exciting to realise how events repeat themselves with one factor always in play: nothing is taken for granted. Every victory has been eventually achieved as only the Nerazzurri know how to do.

Choosing three instants, three stories that give a sense of what Inter really is, is a nearly impossible task. The team has attained eternal glory but if we were to make a choice, we would say that these are the three most iconic moments in Inter’s history.

3 – The 1989 ‘Scudetto’

In 1989, on the shores of the Naviglio Nerazzurro the Scudetto had been a mirage for 9 years. The 1988-89 season saw Inter as a clear favourite though. Trapattoni’s men were clearly superior to all. The acquisitions of Matthäus, Brehme, Berti and Díaz gave the Nerazzurri a much-needed boost.

The campaign was extremely successful for Inter, with several Serie A record being broken. The team tallied a total of 58 out of 68 possible points and suffered only two defeats, against Torino and Fiorentina. Only Juve managed to stand their ground in the double confrontation, obtaining two draws. In short, the exception that confirms the interist rule. For once the unpredictability and the black and blue DNA were put aside to make room for total domination.

2 – Grande Inter

In Italian football the nickname “Grande” is given to only a few teams. A Grande team is not only victorious, they also mark a watershed moment in the history of the sport, which perfectly applies to Angelo Moratti’s Inter. The symbolic year is 1965.

In the past year came the first European success with the victory of the Champions’ Cup, but the domestic League was not as glorious for the Nerazzurri. The continental success was repeated in ’65 with a wonderful ride culminating with the victory over Benfica in the final held at the Meazza Stadium. While able to claim the Intercontinental Cup, Herrera’s men lacked success in the Coppa Italia, where their race to success was halted in the final.

The Scudetto though came in a very unexpected fashion. On 31 January, Milan was 7 points ahead of the Grande Inter. Fate seemed to have already been determined for the Nerazzurri, but at the end of winter a crazy ride begun that will culminate in the 5-2 victory in the Derby di Milano, with Inter overtaking AC Milan in the Serie A table and never looking back. Herrera’s man tallied a total 54 points, while AC Milan finished as runner-up with 51.

1 – Triplete

The years pass and Inter struggles to open a new winning cycle. Inter seasons are advancing relentlessly and fans are eager to return to success. A Moratti, however, returns as President of the Nerazzurri in ’95. Massimo, after his legendary father Angelo, rekindles the hopes of the Interisti faithful.

The Scudetto is regained for the first time in 2006 with Mancini, but the most important day is 22 May 2010. On that magical night in Madrid, Milito becomes king, Zanetti is a leader for the ages and Mourinho is the general who makes all the right calls.

That fantastic Nerazzurri team climbs to the top of the world by claiming the most prestigious title in European football, the Champion’s League. An absolutely perfect season which is the most glorious one in the club’s legendary history.

Can You Bet On Inter For Next Season?

At the dawn of the 2020/21 season, it’s still not entirely clear if Inter is set for success. With transfer rumours surrounding Vidal, Eriksen and Nainggolan, the current roster might undergo several changes before the new campaign starts.
