After securing the transfer of Ferran Torres, the attention of the board has now turned to the defence. A leaky backline has cost the Catalans on many occasions this season, and reinforcement is much needed.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are looking to make a signing in the department during the ongoing winter window. Both left-back and centre-back positions are considered weak, and options are being scouted.

As a preference, Joan Laporta is looking for players who can tick both boxes with their versatility. The idea is to sign such a player on loan until the end of the season.

Thus, Barcelona are on the hunt for a left-footed centre-back. Among the suggested names are Lisandro Martinez, Alessio Romagnoli, and Marcos Senesi.

Martinez has been one of Ajax’s star players this season, maintaining nine clean sheets in the league alone. With three clearances, two interceptions and two tackles averaged per 90 minutes, he is amongst the top young defenders in the world.

The 24-year-old has largely been considered the ideal signing for Barcelona. However, Ajax would not let go of the talented defender easily. It would take significant financial resources for Barcelona to pull off his signing.

Romagnoli is one of the mainstays of AC Milan’s defence. The 27-year-old has impressive numbers this season, with close to five defensive actions per game. His contract expires in six months, and is currently open to negotiate with other teams.

Senesi of Feyenoord is the least known of the three targets. Currently playing in the Eredivisie, he is one of the pillars supporting his club’s impressive run in the league.

His recent display against FC Groningen caught the eyes of scouts across the globe, for Senesi was phenomenal on the night. Three clearances, two interceptions and two tackles were the statistics he put up at the Hitachi Capital Mobility Stadium. His two key passes were the icing on the cake.
