Three Italy players looking for redemption after disappointing EURO 2024

Italy’s disappointing elimination from EURO 2024 upset the Azzurri fans worldwide. Many players will be looking for redemption this season, but in this article, we’ll focus on three in particular.

Fans betting on EURO 2024 saw France and England as the favourites to win the tournament, but Spain shocked Les Blues and the Three Lions as well as host country Germany, going on to win the continental trophy for the fourth time in history, more than any other team in Europe.

Spain also beat Italy in the group phase with a dominant performance in Gelsenkirchen. Even if the Azzurri were not expected to win a second consecutive Euro title, their elimination was painful for all the Tifosi, who didn’t see appropriate commitment from their players.

Below, are three players looking for redemption in 2024-25 after a disappointing summer in Germany.

1. Gianluca Scamacca

Gianluca Scamacca stands out as a classic centre forward, one of those Italy hasn’t had for a very long time. The ex-West Ham and Sassuolo striker joined Italy in Germany with big expectations, but he was unable to show his worth on the pitch. Scamacca’s success lies within his club career, so he’ll be hoping to play a key role in La Dea’s season once again in 2024-25. In his debut season in Bergamo, Scamacca helped La Dea win the Europa League and secure a fourth-place finish in Serie A. Many expected him to shine at the Euros, but this was not the case. Potentially, Scamacca remains the best Italian centre forward at Spalletti’s disposal so he’ll be looking to bounce back as quickly as possible with La Dea.

2. Federico Chiesa

It’s been a tough start to the summer transfer window for Chiesa. Even if the Italian striker recently got married, he also learned that he’s not part of the Juventus project under Motta, so the Serie A giants will be looking to sell him for circa €25m. A diminutive winger with excellent dribbling skills, a short stature, and a thin build, Chiesa poses a serious threat against rival defences through goalscoring opportunities created with his dribbling. He didn’t score or assist with Italy at EURO 2024, and whether he stays at Juventus or leaves, he will have to prove that he’s a top-class player who can further help Italy in the near future.

3. Nicolò Barella

The Sardinian midfielder had a tough start to the Euros as he missed two pre-tournament friendlies due to a tricky muscle injury. When he scored the winner in the debut against Albania, many thought that the good old Barella was back after a quick break, but unfortunately for Spalletti, that was not the case. Barella struggled to find the correct position on the pitch during the Euros, and even if he was one of the only three Azzurri goal-scorers in the tournament, his leadership skills didn’t emerge in Germany, and the tactical confusion surrounding the team ended up overwhelming him as well. Under Simone Inzaghi at Inter, Barella will reset and have a fresh start, hoping to give their contribution soon enough to the Azzurri.
