Three clubs including Real Madrid wanted to sign Spurs midfielder Yves Bissouma

According to Athletic (Subscription Required), three clubs including Spanish giants Real Madrid were in the race to sign Mali international Yves Bissouma this summer before Spurs managed to leapfrog and secure the services of the former Brighton man.

Bissouma’s start to life at Spurs has been far from plain sailing. The talented midfielder has struggled to break into Antonio Conte’s team till now, managing to earn just one start against West Ham in which he disappointed.

For a player who when signed seemed like the real deal and the perfect Antonio Conte midfielder, Bissouma has struggled to adapt to life under the Italian tactician and is yet to convince him.

As Spurs get ready to take on Bissouma’s former club Brighton today at the Amex stadium, the 26-year-old will be hoping that Conte hands him a start against a team that he knows all too well.

Although Bissouma has consistently made appearances on the bench until now, it has been for very few minutes when the Mali international is unable to show his best form and struggles to impact the game.

It has now emerged that there were several other clubs who were interested in signing the player from Brighton before Spurs did, with Real Madrid, Liverpool and Manchester United all said to be interested in Bissouma.

There have been calls for Antonio Conte to shift to a 3-5-2 formation at Spurs. In such a scenario, a new spot will open up for a midfielder and Bissouma will be hoping to take advantage of that.

Bissouma put in some memorable performances in a Brighton shirt which made clubs around the world sit up and take notice of him. Today, the 26-year-old will be hoping to put in a similar performance in a Spurs shirt against his former club.
