Last week, the new Bundesliga season began with a bang as Borussia Mönchengladbach pushed the German champions, Bayer Leverkusen, to their limits.

With the hosts performing an extraordinary comeback, it took an injury-time penalty for Die Werkself to come away with all three points.

However, their league rivals for the Meisterschale this season: Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, and RB Leipzig, all picked up three points as well.

On top of this, the two newly promoted sides, Holstein Kiel and St. Pauli, both started their campaigns in defeat as they continue to adapt to life in Germany’s top tier this weekend.

Nevertheless, a new week brings new storylines, so what is there to watch out for on matchday two of the 2024-25 Bundesliga season?

An all-important Topspiel

For the first time this season, two of the four favourites to lift the Meisterschale will meet in what is a highly anticipated clash on Saturday evening.

On matchday one, Die Werkself looked far from their best, despite taking a two-goal lead.

Gladbach were able to fight their way back into the game and highlighted how vulnerable their backline is at this stage of the campaign.

However, Leipzig were equally unconvincing, narrowly overcoming relegation contenders VfL Bochum.

Both sides are still trying to find their form, meaning that it is a great opportunity for either team to gain three points in the race for the Bundesliga title.

Who will have catching up to do?

As it stands, seven sides are currently pointless in the Bundesliga, having all fallen to defeat last weekend.

While the season is just in its infancy, no team wants to get stuck at the bottom of the table early in the campaign.

Should any of the seven sides slump to back-to-back defeats, then frustration can take hold and heads can drop.

It is worth keeping an eye out for those at the foot of the Bundesliga table this weekend and seeing who will have some catching up to do over the next few weeks.

Bayern Munich’s shaky backline

Against Wolfsburg on Sunday afternoon, Der Rekordmeister were fortunate to come away with all three points.

Both Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-jae struggled to prove why Bayern paid a combined €92.5 million for the pair, as Wolfsburg took advantage of their mistakes.

As well as this, both central defenders have been training individually this week, leaving many to suggest that Bayern will once again look vulnerable against an SC Freiburg side in fine form.
