Sacha Tavolieri is reporting that Clinton Mata is set to join Lyon for €5m. The Angolan international will sign a three year deal with the side and depart Club Brugge. Mata’s contract with the former Belgian champions was set to expire in 2026. During his time in Belgium with Club Brugge, Mata won three league titles.
Mata joined Club Brugge in the summer of 2018. The 30-year-old, who can play as a full-back or in a back three, has made 197 appearances for the side and scored six goals. Prior to joining Club Brugge, Mata spent time with Eupen, Charleroi and Genk.
Lyon are looking for a new right sided defender after Malo Gusto was bought by Chelsea in the summer of 2023. He returned on loan to the French side for the rest of the season, but is now set to fight for a starting place at Stamford Bridge.
Mata has, over numerous transfer windows, been linked with a move away from Belgium. There were strong links between the player and Monaco due to Phillipe Clement departing Brugge for the Principality.
