Thomas Tuchel has been “undemanding” of recruitment

James Robson covers Chelsea for the Evening Standard, and today he’s unleashed a retrospective looking back at a year of Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea.

There’s some nice fluff about the year overall, but the most interesting part comes on the subject of transfers.

The club went big in the summer, buying Romelu Lukaku for close to £100m, hoping he would solve their issues. It has yet to do so. Attempts to sign Achraf Hakimi and Jules Kounde came to nothing.

But it’s not a disaster, and Tuchel is apparently “undemanding regarding recruitment.”

This echoes what he says every time he’s asked about transfers – yes maybe we need a tweak here or there, but I’m happy with what I have. It seems like maybe he’s telling the truth, not just being diplomatic.

Maybe that’s a good thing – a demanding manager would likely be very frustrated by the failed attempts to sign a left back this month.
