Jorginho’s game for Chelsea yesterday was one of very mixed fortunes. He was probably our best player on the pitch in the first half, then he made a terrible mistake to let Manchester United score, but then he stepped up to convert the penalty to get us back in it.

Mistakes happen in football of course, despite this one being a major one. But you do have to applaud the midfielder for having the bravery and character to step up and slot the penalty home and amend his error, especially after he has been missing a few spot kicks recently.

Manager Thomas Tuchel says this kind of error is ‘unusual’ for the Italian international and Chelsea in general, but he is pleased with how he reacted showing ‘courage’ and ‘character’ in his words reported by the Chelsea website after the match.

Mistakes cannot be changed, so it is all about how you react, and Jorginho did that well.

“It’s very unusual, a mistake like this and to concede a goal like this for us in general, and especially with Jorgi,” Tuchel said.

“I think he misjudged the situation and he was heavily disturbed from the lights so he did not see the ball in the end.

“But it takes a lot of courage and personality to not be affected during the match, to have the courage to take the penalty for the equaliser in a crucial moment. I’m very happy that he did it.”
