Chelsea are ploughing on with what may well end up being their longest season ever, but in his press conference today, Thomas Tuchel explained that he wasn’t going to rotate excessively in the games to come.
As he explained, his concern is getting his players back into form, and switching them around constantly doesn’t help with that:
“Not so much at the moment, we don’t manage too much,” the Chelsea coach responded in quotes picked up by Football.London when asked whether he would be making major changes to his side through these midweek games.
“It’s about, for us at the moment, to keep on going and find our rhythm where we struggle a bit. That is no secret,”
The fact that the Blues have just come back from the Club World Cup, and have had games in four other competitions this month were also cited as a reason it’s been difficult to get any consistency going.
“It’s a bit strange to be very honest to have two Premier League matches in six weeks, it’s really strange because it’s always nicer and more familiar to sink into a competition and there are so many different levels of games now.
“If you look at the table, some teams have three matches more than another, so it’s a bit strange to understand the situation in which we are in the Premier League.
“On the other hand, it’s nice because it tells us we are still in a lot of competitions, which is our target, and it shows are competitive.
With that in mind, we would expect only the injury doubts to miss tomorrow evening’s game against Lille in the Champions League, with a very similar team lining up to face Liverpool in the EFL Cup final on Sunday. The midweek FA Cup game after that will provide the chance for a break and some rotation.
