Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that Sven Ulreich will start as the goalkeeper for the fixture away at Mainz in the Bundesliga tomorrow.
There had been recent speculation that Manuel Neuer would start in goal for Bayern Munich after recovering from his leg break that he suffered back in December 2022.
However, Tuchel believes that Neuer needs more time and would benefit from some more training sessions before making his return to the team.
“We’ve got Manu back in training. That’s an excellent story. We’re very proud of him. We decided together with him yesterday that Sven Ulreich will be in goal against Mainz and probably against Galatasaray to give him more training sessions. He’s trained very well. But despite all the delight, we can’t get too far ahead of ourselves,” said Tuchel.
Bayern have also had their problems with injuries in the defensive positions over the past month with Dayot Upamecano and Matthijs de Ligt amongst those who picked up injuries. De Ligt has had time to train during the international break after recovering from a knock.
Tuchel has provided an update on who would be starting in the central defensive positions tomorrow.
“We’re planning with Matthijs de Ligt and Kim Min-jae at centre-back. Matthijs has trained fully again and is ready for tomorrow.”
There has also been confirmation from Tuchel on who will be unavailable for the match and who are still trying to gain match fitness.
“We need to wait a bit with Joshua Kimmich. He trained for the first time yesterday. It’ll be tight. Noussair Mazraoui, Serge Gnabry, Dayot Upamecano and Raphaël Guerreiro are out. Everyone else can train. Leon Goretzka is still a doubt. “
