Bochum has announced that their sporting director Sebastian Schindzielorz will step down when his contract expires at the end of the year, head coach Thomas Reis is expected to extend his contract which runs out in 2023.

Reis has been linked to a move away from Bochum in recent weeks including the Wolfsburg role before Niko Kovač got the job. The club are now confident that the 48-year-old will sign a contract extension before his current one runs out next year.

Schindzielorz has been the club’s sporting director since 2018 and oversaw Bochum’s promotion alongside Reis to the Bundesliga.

The 43-year-old expressed views in a statement on the club’s website: “I took my time to think about the decision not to extend my contract with VfL Bochum, discussed it with my family and informed Hans-Peter Villis. I haven’t had any contract talks with other clubs and I haven’t committed myself to a new club. A change therefore played no role in the decision. The primary goal is to give VfL the earliest possible planning security and then, for me personally, the freedom to find a new challenge.”

Bochum’s CEO Hans-Peter Villis has calmed fans’ fears by saying that Schindzielorz is still “working flat out on the composition of the new team for the coming season.”
