Bayern Munich were knocked out of the DFB Cup by second division Holstein Kiel on Wednesday night. Needless to say, the players and the staff were clearly upset after the game, but Thomas Muller, in particular, wasn’t taking the defeat well.

Muller lost his cool with the post-match interviewer for German broadcaster ARD, Valeska Homburg, who laughed during the post-match interview when asking him about the mood in the Bayern dressing room following the loss.

Muller replied angrily: “What do you think? You are laughing here now.”

Homburg attempted to clarify that she wasn’t laughing at Bayern but Muller interrupted with: “Of course you laughed.”

Homburg then asked Muller if there was any attempts to explain Bayern’s early cup exit, and the German replied: “No, there was nothing at all.

“The mood is what you would expect. We are of course down, you can of course imagine that. That the mood is not good.

“The bottom line is that we lost to the underdog from Kiel. We got a lot more out of the game in the first half. It wasn’t a cup sensation that was hinted at from the start.

“We got out of the break well and made it 2-1. The snow and wind then made it nervous. Nevertheless, we should have won the game. It’s very, very disappointing.”

This was Bayern’s second consecutive defeat, after the 3-2 loss to Bayer Leverkusen last week.

Muller took to Instagram to apologise for lashing out and also admitted his frustration at his loss.

He wrote: “The last minute shock is still in our limbs. Nevertheless, congratulations at this point to @holsteinkiel for advancing, which was a little lost in all the frustration earlier in the interview. @homburg_valeska, we both could have probably done a little better — no offense.”

Speaking after the game, Bayern boss Hansi Flick said: “It’s a shock. We are extremely disappointed. Their first goal was the same pattern as the last few games.

“We have to close gaps in the centre, and we didn’t do that. For their second goal we didn’t have enough men inside the box and didn’t defend one against one.”
