Germany finish the World Cup group stage with a win after beating Costa Rica 4-2 but it wasn’t enough due to results elsewhere, resulting in their elimination. Serge Gnabry opened the scoring early on, but Germany were unable to capitalise on this as Costa Rica scored twice to take the lead in the second half. Substitutes Kai Havertz and Niclas Füllkrug both scored to give Germany the win but it wasn’t enough.

Thomas Müller, who started the game at the number nine position, reacted to Germany’s exit speaking to Das Erste (via Murker): “If this was my last game, it was a huge pleasure. We experienced incredible moments together. In every game, I tried to leave my heart on the pitch. I’ve done it with love.”

Müller has played over 120 games for Germany scoring 44 goals, he was key in both Germany’s run to the semi-finals in 2010 and in their winning campaign in 2014. Müller has scored 10 World Cup goals in total, leaving him six goals off of former teammate Miroslav Klose. Before the World Cup, Müller had not played a game of football since Bayern Munich beat Barcelona 3-0 in October. He has started all three games in Qatar.
