Thiago Silva has been at Chelsea for a season and a half, and the Brazilian has barely put a foot wrong in that time.
Yesterday however, the whole back line was a disaster, and according to WhoScored’s ratings system, Silva was the worst of all.
He ended up with a rating of 5.6/10, lower than anyone else on the pitch.
The mistakes Chelsea made were largely collective, and it’s hard to think of individual moments so much as group failings.
But Silva was out of sorts, there’s no denying that, and it’s perhaps a sign that he needs the back 3 for protection. Antonio Rudiger has also had shaky moments in a back 4 before, while Marcos Alonso is just not cut out for it either.
This could well be the last time we see this 4141 shape for a while, at least with this personnel. When buying Alonso and Rudiger replacements, finding versatile defenders will be vital.
