Santiago Gimenez enjoyed his farewell at Feyenoord. The fans waved the 24-year-old Mexican striker goodbye during halftime of the Rotterdammers’ friendly against VfL Wolfsburg.
“It feels great to be back here,” Gimenez told ESPN afterwards. “This feels like my second home. I’ve felt that way ever since I arrived. So it’s nice to be back here and say goodbye to the fans this way. Of course, it was important for me to say goodbye.”
Gimenez, of course, left for AC Milan in January for a record 32 million euro fee. However, during that move, he wasn’t able to plan a short-term return to Rotterdam. “It was a difficult farewell, as I’d already reached an agreement with AC Milan, and then we suddenly found ourselves facing each other in the Champions League qualifying round.” There, Feyenoord defeated AC Milan 2-1 on aggregate.
“No matter where I play or where I am, I will always be a Feyenoord fan. I have so many wonderful memories here. I came here as a child, and Feyenoord made a man out of me. My Champions League debut against Lazio was truly something I will cherish forever. I still have a lot of contact with the Feyenoord players I played with. I always try to watch the games and will continue to follow them.”
