Today we are looking at...

Positions - Regista, Trequartista & more!

Think you know your Serie A positions? If not, don't worry - we have you covered.

La difensa - The defense

  1. Portiere - Goalkeeper.

  1. Difensore centrale - Central defender.
  2. Libero - A sweeper, like Franco Baresi or Gaetano Scirea.
  3. Stopper - A word for a tough, man-marking central defender.
  4. Terzino - A fullback. Terzino destro is right-back, terzino sinistro is left-back.
  5. Volante - Literally means flying and is applied to wing-backs who attack.

I centrocampisti - the midfielders

  1. Ala - A true winger
  2. Centrale - An all-rounder, a player who can do it all.
  3. Laterale - A midfielder that plays on the side, but not as advanced as a typical winger.
  4. Mediano. A defensive midfielder, one who simply breaks up play and stops opponents from playing.
  5. Mezzala - A half-winger. A player pushed out wide who isn’t a winger.
  6. Regista -  This is more a style of player than a position. It literally means “conductor” like in an orchestra, so not every player who sits in front of the defence and passes is a regista. Andrea Pirlo is the best example.
  7. Trequartista - Literally meaning “three-quarters,” this is a role between the attack and midfield, a classic no.10 role.

Gli attaccanti - The forwards

  1. Attaccante di rapina - Literally “a striker who robs,” i.e. what English fans refer to as a “goal poacher”.
  2. Bomber - Any player who scores lots of goals. Also used as a joke when a player who rarely scores nets a few in quick succession.
  3. Prima Punta -  A striker who leads the line, stays pressed forward in attack. A typical no.9.
  4. Seconda Punta - The second striker, playing more advanced than a no.10 but not a true striker, like Paulo Dybala.
