Not a great day for Newcastle United.
The match thrown away on Saturday in a 15 minute period at the Etihad.
Those three first half goals setting Manchester City on their way to an easy 4-0 victory.
Newcastle United just didn’t show up.
A very rare occurrence as proved by the fact that Eddie Howe’s side had won 12 of their previous 14 matches.
Whilst some are intent on playing the blame game.
For me, it is a case of leaving it to Eddie Howe and his staff to now go away and analyse what went wrong, how to quickly move on and refocus.
Which I think is what we as Newcastle United fans need to do.
Things could look very different in seven days time for NUFC and here’s why.
This is how the Premier League table currently looks on Sunday (16 February 2025) morning:
These are the Premier League matches to be played up to and including seven days time:
Sunday 16 February
Liverpool v Wolves (2pm)
Spurs v Man U (4.30pm)
Wednesday 19 February
Villa v Liverpool (7.30pm)
Friday 21 February
Leicester v Brentford (8pm)
Saturday 22 February
Everton v Man U (12.30pm)
Bournemouth v Wolves (3pm)
Arsenal v West Ham (3pm)
Fulham v Spurs (3pm)
Ipswich v Spurs (3pm)
Southampton v Brighton (3pm)
Villa v Chelsea (5.30pm)
Sunday 23 February
Newcastle v Forest (2pm)
Man City v Liverpool (4.30pm)
Whatever else happens in all of these other Premier League matches, if Newcastle United beat Forest next Sunday, Eddie Howe’s side will be three points off third top.
Yes, I know there are a cluster of other teams that will still be around about, but if Newcastle win that Forest game, I think we have a great Premier League outlook for the rest of the season.
That defeat at Man City was painful but out of all 38 games, the away match at the Etihad is surely still one of our two or three toughest fixtures of the season, even if Pep’s side have dipped from their all conquering status.
If Newcastle United get the win over Forest, it is then the completion of a very tough trio of PL matches with an away trip to Anfield.
However, following that, what an opportunity presents itself.
Of the final 11 Premier League games, Newcastle United only face two teams who are currently in the top eight of the PL table, home to Chelsea and away at Arsenal (who Newcastle have already defeated three times this season…).
All of the other nine matches of the final eleven, are against clubs outside the top eight.
Whilst due to the postponement of the Palace match, Newcastle United play six of their final ten Premier League matches at St James’ Park.
With 25 Premier League matches played, Newcastle United have only lost one PL match so far, to the teams who are below 11th in the current table.
This season is still very much in Newcastle United’s hands, both in the Premier League and in both cups.
