Here we are, in early December, with Liverpool sitting nine points clear at the top of the Premier League table – things couldn’t be going any better could they? Despite the Reds’ early domination on both European and domestic fronts, some have suggested that they should be looking to bolster their squad further in the upcoming January transfer window.
However, former Liverpool star Stan Collymore doesn’t quite agree with this sentiment, speaking exclusively to Anfield Index…
When asked whether Liverpool will go out and sign anyone in January, Collymore responded: “Not particularly. If you look at the back four, they’re pretty much staples for this Liverpool side and have been for a number of years.”

Despite the Liverpool defence’s brilliant start to the season, which has seen them concede just 12 goals in 20 games across all competitions, some have suggested that it is still the area of the squad that could do with some reinforcements. Particularly at left-back, with Andy Robertson hitting 30-years-old and showing glimpses of inconsistency this season.
“Liverpool shouldn’t go out and just sign players, when they still have the likes of Jarell Quansah, Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones, Wataru Endo and other exciting players still with plenty to show,” continued Collymore.
For example, Quansah has played just 5% of Liverpool’s minutes in the Premier League this season. Furthermore, Elliott has played just 1% due to a serious injury picked up at the end of September. These two players were both standout performers in Jurgen Klopp’s final season and will be backing themselves to have a huge influence on the second half of this season.

“Historically, I don’t think many teams that are going for the title have ever done much in January,” said Collymore, “It’s more about getting everybody fit again, rather than spending money in the transfer market.”
Based on Collymore’s observations, it’s clear that he believes there is more than enough quality and depth in Liverpool’s current squad to really push this title challenge. As well as the above mentioned Quansah and Elliott, the likes of Diogo Jota, Federico Chiesa and Alisson Becker all expected back from long-term injuries in the upcoming weeks, which will give a huge boost to Arne Slot’s side.

This comes in the midst of links to the likes of Bournemouth’s Milos Kerfkez, Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush and Lyon’s Rayan Cherki. There’s no doubt that Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards will be keeping their ‘opportunistic’ eye on the market in January, but as it stands Collymore isn’t be expecting much movement on the transfer front in the upcoming weeks.
