Manchester City head coach Gareth Taylor is urging his side to implement their game well when they take on Leicester City in a Vitality Women’s FA Cup quarter-final tie at The Academy Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The Cityzens are under pressure after losing their last three games in all competitions while the club currently have a large number of absentees through both injuries and ineligibility.

When speaking to FAWSL Full-Time in his pre-match press conference, Taylor urged his side to rise to the challenge and issued a reminder that the Vitality Women’s FA Cup is a competition that loves the underdog.

“I’m expecting them (Leicester City) to step up a little bit more than they have done,” Taylor said. “We know we are in a cup competition, this is why we love the FA Cup because you are always going to have an underdog and a favourite and there’s potential for an upset. We need to be effective in what we do.”

Leicester City arrive in the North West having lost all of their opening three matches in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League. Taylor went on to say that he is surprised that the club have not yet got points on the board but he expects The Foxes to improve as the season goes on.

He added “We played them away in this stage last season and it was a really tough game, high energy and they played against us the way that we had expected them to play.

“Tomorrow night, we need to be ready and flexible because they’ve got variety in the way that they play.

“We were a bit surprised that they haven’t picked up a point here or there but I am sure that will come, they’ve got a good coach there and Emile (Heskey) helping out in the background. They’re a club that are moving in the right direction. They had success last season, gaining promotion to the league and I am sure that they will find their rhythm in the season ahead.

“It’s going to be a tough game. I’d imagine that they are coming here as underdogs, even in our state. We need to use our home advantage and play our game in our way.”

The Vitality Women’s FA Cup quarter-final tie between Manchester City and Leicester City kicks-off at 7pm on Wednesday evening.
