Southampton boss Marieanne Spacey-Cale says that there is more to come from her side after winning promotion to the FA Women’s Championship.

The Saints secured promotion to the elite game with a 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Women’s National League Championship Play-Off Final at Edgeley Park in Stockport yesterday.

When speaking to the media after the match, Saints boss Spacey-Cale hailed the collective effort towards the club’s promotion whilst adding that there is more to come from her side.

“You don’t build the foundations without the support of everyone at the club,” Spacey-Cale said. “The whole club were involved in the application process – the board, the owners have been fantastic in their support for us.

“We know that there is more to come from here and we know that we have got that support. We can move forward knowing that we have a strong future at this club, we want to keep building and building and see where we can go on this journey.”

Next season will see Southampton test themselves against some established full-time sides in the FA Women’s Championship as well as one or two top tier sides in the domestic cups. Spacey-Cale said that her side are looking forward to testing themselves against the best.

“That’s what we are here for, everything you do in competitive sport is to test yourself and challenge yourself,” The Saints boss said. “We are under no illusions that it is going to be tough but we want to accept that challenge and embrace that challenge and see what we can do and where we can go.”

Southampton were backed by a sizeable away following in Stockport and Spacey-Cale went on to pay tribute to the fans for their support in 2021/2022.

She said “They were amazing, they’ve been amazing all season, they’ve travelled all over the country. In March and April, we travelled 1,500 miles in the month and they were there every step of the way.

“From me to them, I just want to say a massive thank you. When we needed energy, the fans gave us their noise and the players picked up from that. The fans were fantastic and they were the twelfth player that we needed today.”

Southampton’s promotion to the FA Women’s Championship comes just five years after the club formed their senior women’s team.
