Arsenal forward Caitlin Foord says that Australia must learn from their 3-0 home defeat to the United States yesterday.

The Commonwealth Bank Matildas were behind from the very first minute in Sydney as they were defeated by an understrength United States outfit.

Australia are joint-hosts for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023 and they were keen to use the game as a dress rehearsal for some of the battles which they may face in that tournament. When speaking to Football Australia sources after the match, Arsenal forward Foord said that there is room for improvement for the Commonwealth Bank Matildas.

“It is disappointing not to get a win in-front of a home crowd,” Foord said. “There’s a lot to learn from and we have got another game to redeem ourselves (on Tuesday).

“We are looking forward to the opportunity to move on from this game.”

Australia’s fixture against the United States was played out in-front of a record crowd of 36,109 at Stadium Australia and Foord reserved special praise for the fans.

She said “It’s massive. It is huge to see that many fans come out and support us. We really appreciate their support and hopefully, we can go out there and get the win for them next time.”

Australia and the United States will contest their second international friendly at the McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle on Tuesday morning.
