Rangers have today surprised everybody by announcing a new signing in the form of Portugal’s Rafael Fernandes.

The 22 year-old defender is it badly needed body at the back with Rangers suffering so many injuries at present in that department.

We are not going to lie to you on Ibrox noise and say that we know a lot about this lad, but we cannot also lie to you and say we’re overly thrilled about this one.

Rafael Fernándes has probably played less football in the last three seasons than yours truly and is certainly not match fit.

This is not an ideal scenario when we need MREs.

This is not to condemn the boy, but he is not up to speed with Rangers or match action.

There is definitely a hint of panic about this signature, but at least the club got it as a loan with option to buy.

It is a low risk acquisition.

Just 22 and with so little match fitness in the last three years he certainly is not adding much experience to the back, but then we could have said that a bit Clinton as well and he hasn’t been half bad at just 19.

Indeed, Rangers only fit defenders now are the new lad and indeed the Frenchman, not forgetting Leon Balogun of course.

It is also worth noting that like new teammate Oscar Cortes Fernandes never played a single competitive match in the French top flight after his move there.

But then neither did Clinton for Milan.

Hopefully this is more Clinton and Hamza than the majority of Clements other captures.

After all the last time he signed a Portuguese it really did not go well…
