Manchester United loanee Tahith Chong has started just once for Werder Bremen

According to Diechstube (h/t Metro), Werder Bremen chief Clemens Fritz has played down fears regarding the playing time afforded to Manchester United loanee Tahith Chong.

“Neither we nor Manchester United are concerned that he won’t get enough playing time.”

The 20-year-old joined the Bundesliga side earlier this summer on a season-long loan. He was keen to garner more game time after finding it hard to come by at Old Trafford.

Despite impressing in training, he has failed to cement himself as a starter for Die Werderaner. In fact, he has started just one game for the club so far this season.

It turned out to be a disaster for the player as he was hauled off after the hour mark. Werder lost the game 4-1 to Hertha Berlin and Chong has only come off the bench since.

To add to the frustration, Chong was also sidelined for two weeks due to the coronavirus pandemic. He was in close contact with teammate Felix Agu, who tested positive.

While he was available for last weekend’s clash against Frieburg, he stayed on as an unused substitute.

This had prompted fears that United would be unhappy over the youngster’s lack of playing time. Frings has moved in to allay such fears. He has revealed that Chong is likely to be more involved as the season progresses.

“There will be enough time for it. You can already see developmental steps in him. Steps that should lead to longer Bundesliga appearances as soon as possible.”

Chong has so far made just four appearances for Werder Bremen, scoring one goal. The season is long though, and he will hopefully get all the chances he deserves.

The Dutch youth international recently extended his United contract until 2022 with the option of a further year. Having joined from Feyenoord Rotterdam in 2018, Chong has so far made 16 appearances for the United first-team.

Primarily a right-winger, he is equally adept on the other flank. He particularly impressed in a cameo role as a left-back against LASK at Old Trafford last season.
