Ian Maatsen enjoyed a superb season on loan for Burnley, before returning to Chelsea and then joining Dortmund

Burnley fans watching the Netherlands at Euro 2024 could be forgiven for feeling a sense of frustration at the Clarets missing out on the signing of Ian Maatsen.

The 22-year-old joined Borussia Dortmund on loan from Chelsea in January and helped the Bundesliga giants to reach the Champions League final, which they ultimately lost to Real Madrid at Wembley.

Maatsen started 22 of his 23 appearances for Dortmund in all competitions and his impressive form was rewarded with a call-up to the Netherlands squad for Euro 2024.

The left-back, who has made 17 appearances for the Oranje's Under-21 side, was an unused substitute on Sunday as the Netherlands beat Poland 2-1 courtesy of a late goal from Wout Weghorst.

Unlike Maatsen, the latter is still under contract at Burnley, despite having spent the last two seasons on loan at Besiktas, Manchester United and Hoffenheim.

Maatsen joined Burnley on loan from Chelsea in the summer of 2022 and established himself as a crucial cog in Vincent Kompany's side that won promotion to the Premier League after romping to the title in the Championship with 101 points, sweeping aside everything in their path and clinching promotion with seven matches remaining — a new record.

The Dutchman scored four goals - including the winner on his debut against Huddersfield - and set up a further six in 39 Championship appearances under the former Manchester City captain and was named in the Championship Team of the Season.

According to The Athletic, Burnley were keen for Maatsen to make the move to Turf Moor permanent last summer but had a £15m bid knocked back by Chelsea, who demanded £20m for the Netherlands Under-21 international.

Burnley had bid accepted for Ian Maatsen

Later last summer, the Daily Mail reported the Blues had accepted a deal that would see the full-back join the Clarets on loan with an obligation for them to buy him for £31.5m plus add-ons at the end of the season.

According to the report, however, the Dutchman turned the down insisting he preferred to remain at Chelsea and fight for his place rather than return to Turf Moor either permanently or on loan.

But Maatsen was used sparingly by Mauricio Pochettino and racked up just 378 minutes of football across 15 appearances in all competitions, with Ben Chilwell and Marc Cuccurella both ahead of him in the pecking order at left-back.

While the 22-year-old joined Dortmund in January and went to play in the Champions League final, Burnley's sojourn in the top-flight was short-lived, as they won only five games, accumulating just 24 points last term and were relegated along with fellow newcomers Luton and Sheffield United.

As it stands, Charlie Taylor is the only left-back on Burnley's books as the Clarets prepare for life in the Championship, but Connor Roberts, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Leeds, and Vitinho can also fill the role.

Maatsen, meanwhile, revealed last month he was yet to decide his future with Borussia Dortmund keen to trigger his £35m release clause, according to the Daily Mail.

The left-back has all it takes to establish himself as one of the best young defenders in Europe, leaving Burnley fans wondering what could have been.
