Luis de la Fuente expects an even clash between two of Europe’s greatest international teams when Spain meet France in the semi-finals of the UEFA Nations League on Thursday.
It is a repeat of last year’s UEFA Euro 2024 semi-final, also played on German soil, which saw la Roja progress to the final. That experience and the “fantastic memories” live fresh in the minds of the Spanish squad, revealed De la Fuente in his pre-match press conference on Wednesday evening.
That match also saw Lamine Yamal write his name in the history books, smashing two of Pelé’s records – and the 17-year-old has enjoyed an incredible club season with Barcelona since. Considered as one of the favourites to win the Ballon d’Or later this year, the teenager has the backing of De La Fuente, who said “my vote would go to Lamine, Fabian [Ruiz], Pedri or any Spaniard who is nominated.”
“When I talk about a good player… it’s very subjective. I prioritise the ability and quality of the player, then you have to add titles. But above all, he has to be special, a great footballer. Those who make history, who set a standard in world football,” the 63-year-old explained.
Despite heading into Thursday’s match as European champions, and with experience of beating France along the way, De la Fuente revealed that he does not see either side as clear favourites to progress, or win the tournament as a whole.
“The Germany v Portugal game is being played right now, which could be the final of a World Cup. It’s difficult to talk about favourites when there is so much equality and such a high level. These matches will be determined by the details,” he suggested.
